The focus of this year's Boston's Cares promotion is Teen Dating Violence Awareness in support of our local Domestic Violence Council, action team of The Alliance for a Violence Free Anoka County.

Small Business Saturday, November 26th 2011

Last Saturday, November 26th, 2011 was Small Business Saturday.  The idea behind Small Business Saturday is to support locally-owned businesses and Coon Rapids along with our surrounding communities did just that!  Boston's Coon Rapids would like to thank everyone who came by our Restaurant & Sports Bar last Saturday to show their support for us as a locally-owned business!

The Boston's Pizza Foundation & Local Efforts

Since its inception in 1998, the Boston’s Pizza Foundation has raised more than $400,000 dollars through various fundraising initiatives in Boston’s Pizza restaurants throughout the United States and Canada. The money we raise directly supports local and national nonprofit organizations that contribute to the health and well-being of children and families in need.
The Boston’s Pizza Foundation is proud to support the following charities:

Kids Matter International is a Texas-based charity that is committed to helping children. Their mission is to bring healing to children around the world affected by debilitating conditions, from abandonment to chronic illness, so that they may become healthy, educated and viable members of their communities.
In 2010, Boston’s supported KMI’s local Kids Matter Around the Block! program by raising more than $61,000 and helping 768 underprivileged children from North Texas select new winter wardrobes.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder of, and advocate for, type 1 diabetes research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

In 2010, Boston’s raised $100,000 for JDRF during its annual Valentine’s fundraiser to support the organization’s efforts in funding critical research toward finding a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.
Each year Boston’s makes a contribution to the Children’s Hospital of Boston and Dr. Hannah Kinney, the leading Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) researcher in the nation.

National Boston's Pizza fundraising efforts have been a great success thanks to localized support from our guests!  Don't forget, each individual restaurant works with local charities in its community too because we know that every little bit helps and sometimes its difficult to get the support you need from larger, more broad focussed organizations. Boston's Coon Rapids has worked to help raise money for many organizations, some are as follows:  the Susan G. Komen foundation, Salvation Army, Red Cross, our local JDRF chapter, ALS Association (Lou Gehrig's Disease), local school sports teams, Violence Prevention Council of Anoka County (Child Abuse Awareness & Domestic Violence Awareness), and a local Anoka County family in an effort to raise awareness about bullying.

We choose our cause based on requests we receive from you or inspiration we get from our own team members. Our Heritage

Boston's The Gourmet Pizza has a long and eventful history that dates all the way back to 1964.

It started with Gus Agiortis, a Greek immigrant who had jumped ship in Vancouver, and then opened the first Boston Pizza in Edmonton, Alberta in 1964. He worked tirelessly to make pizza a household name in Western Canada. Gus' first restaurant was known as "Boston Pizza and Spaghetti House."

The company started franchising in 1968 and has since evolved from a "pizza joint" into a full service casual dining restaurant and sports bar. Six years after opening, Gus had 17 locations (two corporate and 15 franchised) in operation across Western Canada. Gus believed that a potential franchisee didn't need a restaurant background, but needed strong people skills, a passion for hard work and new horizons. This philosophy still stands true today.

Gus had created a popular concept, with strong values. Most, if not all, franchisees were either family or friends. The strong bonds that were created in the beginning continue today.

By 1978 the chain had expanded to 42 outlets. However, Gus was tired and wanted to spend more time with his family. Long time friend and employee Ron Coyle bought the franchise rights for 31 Boston Pizza restaurants in Western Canada and Ontario (Gus' brothers kept 11 and operated them under separate names.) Gus believed in this business ... "friends help friends." He knew Ron would continue his tradition of excellence.

The deal was signed in March 1978. Ron changed the name to Boston Pizza International Ltd, and the company entered a new era. Ron understood the need for communication between his franchisees, so he implemented the Annual Franchisee Conference, a tradition that remains today.

While all of this was happening, the relationship was building between Jim Treliving, a Boston Pizza franchisee, and his accountant George Melville. George provided business counsel and insight for Jim that helped build his restaurant and clientele.

In 1973 George and Jim invested in their first franchise together. Over the next ten years, they worked hard and opened a total of 16 restaurants. Both young men enjoyed the entrepreneurial spirit that Boston Pizza and its franchisees shared. They saw amazing potential within Boston Pizza and its franchisees, so in 1983 they purchased the entire 44 unit chain.

When EXPO 86 rolled into Vancouver, Boston Pizza joined on as a corporate sponsor and boasted three stores on the grounds, while mega-corporation McDonald's had five outlets. Expo was a ground breaking triumph for Boston Pizza sales. The EXPO experience gave the company worldwide exposure, a major league image and a foothold into an international future.

In 1992 Boston Pizza International Ltd opened up their corporate headquarters in Richmond, BC. Today, Boston Pizza is the predominant casual dining restaurant chain in all of Canada with over 350 locations.

In 1998 the Boston Pizza team set its sights on expansion "south of the border" into the United States. A U.S. headquarters was set up in Dallas, Texas. The Boston Pizza name was changed to Boston's The Gourmet Pizza to communicate the superior product offering ... this isn't just any pizza, it's "gourmet pizza" with a crust, seasonings and flavors unlike any other. Jim and George felt strongly that Dallas was the right place to set up shop because "if you can compete and win there, you can win anywhere."

The first U.S. restaurant opened shortly thereafter in December of 1998 in Tempe, AZ. It was obvious that the "Boston's recipe" easily translated to U.S. customers' tastes and cravings. Soon, more and more Boston's The Gourmet Pizza locations began opening across the United States. To keep pace with the rapid growth, Boston's U.S. headquarters in Dallas grew rapidly as well. All phases of restaurant operations, from training to marketing to recipe development, are now managed by the U.S. team.

Boston's continues its rapid growth today ... with over 50 locations across the U.S. and Mexico and numerous restaurants in development over the next several years. Boston's promise of delivering "two experiences under one roof" continues to satisfy more and more customers every day.

Our Namesake - "Boston's"

There are several popular variations on the origin of the name that have become part of Boston's folklore.
Myth #1: The Agioritis family landed in Boston when they first came to North America.
Myth #2: The fellow living upstairs from the family was named Boston.
Myth #3: Gus Agiortis chose three names (including the Greek Island where he was from) and the first two were rejected by the government. The third was Boston Pizza. When looking at a map, the brothers decided that the city of Boston was an easy name to pronounce. And the truth... Boston was a recognizable and established name ... Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Boston Cream Pie. It was the "Big Leagues."

Violence Prevention in Anoka County

Community work for Boston's Coon Rapids is not something new, but up until now we didn't realize it might be worth discussing.  Our causes are worthy and our effort has been great and this is indeed worth writing about.  One organization that stands out to us with the tremendous effort they have put toward our fundraising partnerships is the Alliance for a Violence Free Anoka County.  This is their mission: "to provide the opportunity for all people of Anoka County to work, play, live and grow in a safe, respectful environment free from violence."  The organization is broken up into action teams to tackle specific issues, and they are as follows:

  • Child Maltreatment: Anoka County Child Abuse Prevention Council

  • Domestic Violence/Intimate Partner Violence: Anoka County Domestic Violence Council

  • Elder Abuse: Elder/Vulnerable Adult Action Team

  • Family Violence Prevention and the Faith Community Role: Partners for Faith in Peace

  • Sexual Violence: Sexual Assault Action Team of Anoka County

Working with the Violence Prevention Council of Anoka County has been an honor and it has also been eye opening.  The issues that affect the county we live in are surely the responsibility and concern of local residents and businesses alike.  We are proud to have worked with them this year and we will continue to work with them during our Boston's Cares fundraiser February of 2012 promoting awareness about Dating Violence for young women.  Education is key to prevention in the matters the Alliance for a Violence Free Anoka County stands for and we are just trying to do our part for the community, honestly.  Our community is why our business is still open in a tough economy so what better way to thank you than to take community issues and work to help support the programs that serve you.

Last spring we partnered with the Violence Prevention Council for the first time in order to organize Child Abuse Awareness month, a cause that is passionate to our manager Tisha Beseke and now to our entire team.  We saw great results raising over $2,000 for the organization.  The pinwheel is the symbol for Child Abuse Awarness.  Boston's sold pinwheels and planted a pinwheel garden in the front of the store to raise awareness and funds to support the efforts of this action team.  The council provided educational materials for our guests and managed it in such a way that it was not in-your-face about the issue, but presented it with sensitivity and respect to our guests.  This was very effective and I give kudos to the organization for their approach.

The money raised was donated on behalf of Tisha Beseke's little brother Rylan. Rylan is a 3 year old boy who was a victim of child abuse when he was just 7 months old. He now suffers from many disabilities because of the effects of the abuse. He was placed in Tisha's parents home for foster care and soon after they adopted him.  I have to say I am proud to work for a locally-owned company who cares to involve themselves in the lives of their employees and community.

Most recently we organized a fundraiser for the Domestic Violence Council, a branch of Violence Free Anoka County.  In the months prior to the fundraiser we worked to spread awareness of the Coaching Boys into Men program by mailing out a "Playbook" to local coaches and a letter inviting them to our fundraiser.  Coaches were offered the opportunity to share the Playbook's information with their student athletes and allow them to sign a pledge dedicating themselves to healthy relationships without violence.  We received signed pledges from the following two teams: Coach Denny Green's Coon Rapids High School Boys Cross Country Team and Coach Jeff Schlieff's Spring Lake Park High School Football Team.  The turn out for Monday night's fundraiser was decent, but we hope to get more of a response next year! It's a tough subject for coaches to bring up to their student athletes, but we are proud for the pledges we received from both of these coaches.  Both coaches were honored on a plaque which can be viewed in the entrance way of Boston's Coon Rapids.  Below is a link to learn more about the program Coaching Boys Into Men.

Boston's would like to thank the Violence Prevention Council and all who work with us to organize these fundraiser and attended them, making them a success.  We believe in the work you do!  Special thanks to Donna McDonald Alliance for a Violence-free Anoka County, Amy Highness co-chair Domestic Violence Council and Goody Vokovan of Connexus Energy.  You are hard working women our community can be proud of!
